The Left Won! Where does that leave the Left?
I have been trying to understand the irrational and scary turn that mainstream liberal opinion has taken and I'm starting to realise how spot on people like Nick Cohen are. The Conservative/Republican centre right parties won on a few fronts but did they win where it really matters.
Yes their economic policies won out, one could say that this is the big one. But is it?
In the UK we still have the NHS and a welfare state. They survived Thatcher.
As we all know heavy industry was sacrificed and there was untold hardship but by and large Thatcher and Reagan's economic policies won the day. (present economic calamities aside)
Where the left won was culturally. For me this is the big one!
In the UK, Europe and to a lesser extent the US there is not a centre right party worth it's salt that doesn't openly except the culture of the liberal/left.
If you want to be electable in most of Western Europe you have to support equality of race, gender and respect for diverse sexualities. You can no longer be openly racist and remain respectable. The leader of the Tory Party openly supports gay marriage and worries out loud about the environment.
Most governments in developed countries strive to look after their minorities. To ensure that they have food shelter and are free from abuse and intimidation. Most of the native populations of developed countries have lost their violently racist urges. In London you are more likely to get beaten up if you are openly racist than you are if your from an ethnic minority.
Yes white racism still exists but on the whole it is a minority of losers who the majority ridicule and look down on and when they step out of line they feel the full weight of the law.
This victory is an amazing one. It's giant!
The problem is now that economically the left have nothing to fight for, yes we have the anti capitalist rabble but they are an idiotic fringe with wet dreams about revolutions. A tiny over privileged middle class group whos politics is based on conspiracy theory and stupidity. They want to smash the system but they don't have any well thought out policies of their own. They will never have the support of the masses.
Other traditionally left wing policies like nationalising industry (what industry?) will not win any elections and the working class have shown us middle class lefties time and time again that they are more likely to read The Sun and vote for Thatcher than they are to read The Socialist Worker or vote for Neil Kinnock.
The economics of the traditional left are now defunct and their traditional support have moved out to Essex to a borjois lifestyle. To add insult to injury the great cultural victory of the left means that the core values of the liberal left have been co-opted by the centre right.
So where does this leave liberals and leftists in the year 2008?
Well the mainstream left seems to be full of irrationality from rampant anti Americanism, the 911 truth movement (We Are Change etc) to support for the murderous far right theocrats of the Middle East.
It is now not unlikely to hear liberal minded people call Salman Rushdie and Ayaan Hirsi Ali racists and call the likes of Al-Qaradawi or Hassan Nasrallah men of reason.
Further more the left have become totally crazed by their hatred of George Bush.
When the death toll in Iraq rises due to the sectarian civil war they don't see it for what it is they just look at the death toll and blame it on the Yanks. As if American soldiers in Iraq are committing genocide instead of the reality that the theocratic far right in both Shia and Sunni communities are the ones committing the genocide and the coalition troops are trying to stop the killings.
But no you can't believe what the press says about sectarian violence as we all know Chomsky was right about the media manufacturing consent for the oil industry.
Worse still the most nasty anti Semitic conspiracies of the far right from The Protocols of Zion are being revamped and trotted out by many on the left.
We have all heard it in respectable circles, "That all powerfull Jewish lobby is lurking somwhere behind all of this strife"
It's all America and Israel's fault.
In the eyes of many on the left the Islamist far right are a bulwark against American imperialism and should be supported in their role as the new revolutionaries.
Anyone who criticises the religion of Islam or the radical Islamists is branded a racist and anyone who criticises their left wing supporters is denounced as a neocon.
With the current economic uncertainty it seems as if the leftists are rubbing their hands with glee hoping that capitalism will collapse and we can go back to growing turnips and using donkey power.
There is a thinly disguised hope that capitalism will fail but they have no ideas about what we should replace it with. They don't take into account all the unrest, murder and mayhem that would follow a global depression or total collapse.
With this muddled mindset it's capitalism that causes all the pain so any famines and wars caused by the death of capitalism will be nothing compared to the famine and war caused by capitalism itself. Add to that there is a hope that the famines and wars will be visited upon those most deserving of suffering, the western super rich and the middle classes.
The funny thing is most of the people who think like this are fully paid up members of the middle classes with good jobs in the media and mortgages to up keep.
With this kind of thinking being rampant in mainstream left how can they be taken seriously?
An even more scary question is if the left have effectively marginalised themselves who will fill the gap?
We have some seriously clear thinking leftsists like David Aaronovitch and Nick Cohen but they have been excomunicated by the left and branded as right wing racists.
We need to stop the rot.

So apparently this makes me a neocon!
I agree with the left on almost every issue there is. I opposed the war in Iraq, I'm anti racist, anti fascist, pro union, pro the redistribution of wealth, pro national health.
I believe in equality for women, homosexuals and all races. We are all equal and I think the policy of governments should reflect that reality.
So what is the problem?
Well I don't believe in cultural relativism, multiculturalism or being politically correct. If all humans are equal then they should all be equally open to criticism and expect to be held to the same standards as wider society.
Also I believe that the far right must be opposed no matter what country they come from or what colour their skin is. More importantly the left should never support theocrats and the far right.
I don't think America is evil and I support Israel's right to exist. I don't believe that capitalism is evil, I don't believe that the mass media is used by evil democratic governments (which are just fronts for the corporations of course) to manufacture consent.
I don't think that white racism and evil liberal democracies are the causes of all the world ills. I don't think that crime is the cry of the oppressed and that it would dry up if we only stopped being so oppressive.
I do think that penalties for violent crime should be harsh and I think the police should be given the powers to enforce the law without fear of the unwritten laws of the politically correct.
These things have put me in direct conflict with the mainstream left. For them I am a heretic.
I have many thoughts on this strange situation and all of the issues that feed into it. I will write more and post links to articles and videos I find interesting.
I hope this sparks a sensible debate and doesn't attract the usual idiotic denunciations of racism or support from racists for that matter.
Peace
